Bits of One

Here are some fun shots of one unfinished painting that look pretty good in their individual smallness. They are part of a painting meant for an art fair this summer here in St. Cloud.

On an unrelated note, I need people to join my mailing list! I have a lot of art show postcards to send out, so please send me your mailing address. I know it’s old fashioned but some of us still send out real actual postcards to announce shows.

I like the parts better than the whole, but it’s not done yet so that might change. Oh yes, the WARM show — It’s called Kinetic Connections. I have one or two paintings left to finish by next Wednesday but it’s not a problem. I can paint fast under pressure if I need to. Wish me luck and come to the reception May 5th!

Variety of New Paintings

I’m finishing up paintings for the next month, then I’ll need a break just to try to sell some things. My inventory is building up to ridiculous levels! This is in progress:

Yes he'll be nude, but not entirely.

See below for ones that are finished.

Art Crawl March 16th

"Orange Resistance" Acrylic on Panel, 12" x 12"

Come to the Historic Downtown St. Cloud, Minnesota, Art Crawl on Friday, March 16th, 5-9 PM. Visit my studio from 5-9 at 701 West St. Germain, Suite 206, in the same building as StudioJeff. The weather will be fine and warm, so stop by. I have a lot of new abstract paintings in a smaller size than my usual more realistic acrylics and watercolors.

And while you are downtown don’t forget to buy something! Think of it as patriotically stimulating the local economy.

Art for Artists and Art Crawl

Art for Artists Exhibit at US Bank and September Art Crawl!

When: Sep 16 – Oct 14, 2011 —  Opens Fri, September 16, 5pm – 9pm

Where: 1015 W Saint Germain St, Saint Cloud Minnesota (map)

Visual Arts Minnesota and US Bank will be presenting Art for Artists Community Art Show, featuring artists from Central Minnesota. Awards will be given for both 2D and 3D work.  I did not win an award, which doesn’t bother me at all since I wasn’t even aware there would be awards given out).  A reception will be held on September 16, from 5-9pm during the St. Cloud Art Crawl.  ”Windmakers” is my entry in this show, and will be displayed for the duration of the show.  I have a photo of it that will be posted this weekend.

During this art crawl I will have a colorful and partially jungle-themed display of my other artwork in the hallways on the 2nd floor, 701 building, where you can also see StudioJeff (a well known gallery).  I am not in that display but you will not be able to miss my display at the end of the 2nd floor hallway!  Photos to come of course.

Some photos of the 701 West St. Germain building hallway on the second floor, where my studio is, are above and below. These are my paintings. You’ll have to visit US Bank in St. Cloud to see the Windmakers painting I did for Art for Artists, because I don’t seem to have a photo of it yet! This painting and four others are now on display in Elk River, for the ERAA member show, which lasts until November 3rd. Have a look at that show at the Sherburne County Government Center. It’s free, of course.

River City

A river on a city, or a city on a river; sort of abstract, and very wild. It’s inspired by this spring’s overflowing rivers and storms.

Lots of motion and texture. This is an acrylic on watercolor paper; about 31″ x 25 (approximate). This painting is matted because it’s on paper, but it does not need a cover like glass. You can see this painting and its companion “Heat Island Effect” in downtown Little Falls, MN, until the end of July.

Costa Rica Seascape Abstract

Before the Rainbow

This is the finished painting, “Before the Rainbow”. The colors are quite bright blue even though it’s during a rainstorm. Even though I like it, I would say this painting is a good example of “overpainting”. The original, which looked more like the “before” photos below (taken with my phone, so they are rather bad) was much more free-flowing, wild and abstract. I then proceeded to mostly paint over most of it, which wasn’t what I intended to do! But sometimes, that happens.

The end result is still a stormy sea with rain and a beach, but it’s much less freely done and less abstract than I intended. It’s important for artists to know when to stop painting, just as it’s important to have some kind of plan when you start to paint, but even so, sometimes you get happy accidents. Sometimes you don’t.

You can see, and even buy, this painting on Leitworks Studio.
